Strategies for Selecting Early Maturing Maize Inbred Lines for Hybrid Production under Low Soil Nitrogen and Striga Infestation

چکیده

Development, testing and selection of superior inbred lines is crucial for the success a hybrid program targeting Striga-infested low soil nitrogen (low-N) environments. The practical value determined by multiple traits, most which are inter-dependent. main objective this study was to identify early maturing based on traits under optimal, low-N environments development population improvement. One hundred were evaluated artificial Striga-infestation, optimal growing two years at Kwadaso Nyankpala in Ghana. exhibited high levels genetic variability grain yield other agronomic desirable Striga resistance tolerance. Under conditions, days silking (DS), ears per plot (EHARV) anthesis (DA) had direct effects (GYLD). Days plant (EPP) highest positive GYLD, while DA negative effect GYLD obtained with EASP. All measured previously identified have influence associated it could be used indirect improved contrasting Forty-eight 100 studied as tolerant forty-nine resistant.

Determination of levels of Striga germination Stimulants for maize gene bank accessions and elite inbred lines

Parasitism by Striga hermonthica (Del) Benth is a severe constraint in maizeproduction in sub-Saharan Africa. Varying levels of tolerance to Striga attack havebeen identified and exploited in breeding programs of several crops. However, thelevel and stability of the tolerance is generally unacceptable in field-practice. Onlylimited exploration has been undertaken among the farmers’ landraces to...

Nitrogen management strategies for smallholder maize production systems: Yield and profitability variability

Maize (Zea mays L.) production requires large amounts of nitrogen (N) thatdirectly affect production cost. Poultry litter can be used as an alternative source ofN. To optimize its use, poultry litter requires technical and economic feasibilityanalyses. Crop simulation models have proven to be efficient tools to support thistype of research. The objectives of this study were to determine yield a...

Nitrogen management strategies for maize production systems: Experimental data and crop modeling

Maize (Zea mays L.) is an important crop among Brazilian smallholder farmers, who are also responsible for 40% of the poultry and egg production in the country.Although poultry litter is considered a potential pollutant, if properly stabilized anddistributed in the field it can be used as a source of nitrogen for maize production. In this study, the response of maize to mineral fertilizer and pou...

Heterosis in Early Maize Ear Inflorescence Development: A Genome-Wide Transcription Analysis for Two Maize Inbred Lines and Their Hybrid

Heterosis, or hybrid vigor, contributes to superior agronomic performance of hybrids compared to their inbred parents. Despite its importance, little is known about the genetic and molecular basis of heterosis. Early maize ear inflorescences formation affects grain yield, and are thus an excellent model for molecular mechanisms involved in heterosis. To determine the parental contributions and ...
